How do the closures of universities due to the corona pandemic affect BAföG?
Please note the following information on the effect of universities closing due to the ongoing corona pandemic:
The pandemic-related closure of universities and BAföG-eligible educational institutions abroad (short-term closures of institutions or the extension of semester breaks) has no effect on your BAföG grant. The Financial Aid Office will treat any closure periods in the current grant period as a semester break or lecture-free period.
As a prerequisite to continue receiving BAföG benefits, students are required to take part in any online coursework made available by a given educational institution for the purpose of ensuring ongoing curricular activities. If the ongoing grant period ends, a full renewal application must be filed to continue receiving aid.
The Student Financing Division is happy to answer any questions you might have.
For students who want to continue their studies abroad and already have a letter of approval for aid from the responsible financial aid office but cannot travel to their destination country due to the current travel restrictions, the above applies. In such cases, the student may be eligible to continue receiving BAföG at current levels if they participate in available online coursework. Students who want to study abroad should direct any questions to the financial aid office responsible for their destination country.
